Teacher Appreciation in a Recession Year

We have all suffered in some way financially over the past 15 months or more. No bonuses, no pay raises and cuts in benefits have made conditions almost hopeless for many in the workplace. And for many, their jobs have completely disappeared.

One profession that has not changed in demand is teaching. Our youth must have an education, therefore we will always need teachers and school staff. But educators are not immune to the economic conditions. Still, teachers and school administrators must put on a happy face and lead their students by example.

We demand a lot from our teachers. They are commissioned with the job of taking our children and shaping them into thinking, working and achieving adults. It is one of the most important, yet under compensated professions in this country.

Compensation involves complicated budgets and school board reviews, so we will not even address that issue. One reward system that we can discuss is teacher recognition. May 2-8, 2010 is Teacher Appreciation Week. It is a week of celebrating education and the roles that teachers and school staff play in it. It is also a relatively inexpensive way to honor your staff members. If funds are scare, parents groups like PTA and PTO organizations should have no problem collecting a few dollars from appreciative parents.

Some simple celebrations and parties can be planned during the week including a kickoff breakfast with bagels, coffee and juice. The teacher's lounge can be decorated with balloons and posters designed by students. A lunch can also be served with pizza, sandwiches and soda. An assembly can be held in your gym or auditorium with participation by students and administrators. Awards can be given to teachers with service milestones or recognized achievements.

A keepsake gift from Teacher Appreciation Week will leave a lasting impression with recipients. Personalized gifts with your school name or logo and hearfelt sentiment of praise will go a long way in building morale and loyalty. Useful items for the desk or fun, apple shaped giveaways like mouse pads, key tags and magnets will bring a smile to every teacher and school staff member's face.

Motivating your teaching staff is worth the small investment. These important professionals are responsible for developing the next generation of leaders who will turn our country around and make it the great place it once was.
